The Greatest Power Needed
Acts 1:8
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
Jesus knew that if the Gospel was going to reach the world, that the believer needs to be empowered with something or someone greater than themselves. This is why Jesus told the disciples to wait for the power of the Holy Ghost to come upon them because He knew they could not do His works in their own power. Let’s face it; in their power they were running off to go fishing, denying that Jesus rose from the dead, and doubting the whole purpose as to why they had spent the previous three years following Christ. However, you can also see the difference the power of the Holy Ghost had upon the apostles and the believers in the early church.
The greatest power that the believer needs today is the power of the Holy Ghost. It says in the verse above, “But ye shall receive power…” In other words, the power the disciples had was not powerful enough to do the work of Christ. Likewise, your intellect and influence are never great enough to do the work of the LORD. The greatest reason many believers never see great works accomplished through their lives is because they are working through their power instead of through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Moreover, the power of the Holy Ghost will give you boldness that you don’t currently obtain. Acts 4:29 shows the results of being empowered by the Holy Ghost when it says about the apostles, “…that with all boldness they may speak thy word.” Many believers are bold in their career field, but they are timid and lack boldness to give the Gospel to the lost when faced with witnessing to others. You will continue to be timid in your witness for Christ as long as you attempt to do a supernatural work through human power. The only way you are going to have the boldness you need to be a witness for Christ is to be empowered by the Holy Ghost.
My friend, the purpose of the Holy Ghost power is to be a witness to the lost. The verse above says, “…and ye shall be witnesses unto me…” When were the apostles enabled to have an impacting witness for Christ? They were enabled after they were empowered from the Holy Ghost. The whole purpose of being empowered by the Holy Ghost is so that you can be a witness for Christ to this world. Nobody will ever know the power of the Holy Ghost until they begin to witness for Christ. There is no need for you to have the Holy Ghost power on your life if you are not going to give the Gospel to the lost world.
Moreover, the power of the Holy Ghost will also enable you to see God perform great works through your life. In Acts 4:30, the apostles knew they needed the power of the Holy Ghost so that great “signs and wonders” could be performed through their lives. The great works of God will never be seen without God’s people being empowered from the Holy Ghost.
My friend, the world can only see if you are real by whether God’s power is upon you. Acts 4:13 says about the apostles after they were filled with the Holy Ghost, “…they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” The world will never see Christ through your life until you start working through the power of the Holy Ghost.
