The Harvest
Luke 10:2
“Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.”
There are 7.53 billion people in the world, and most of those people will go to Hell when they die because they have never heard the Gospel. We know that the answer to the 7.53 billion people in this world and their problems is the Gospel, but the Gospel cannot do its work in the hearts of people without laborers to bring the Gospel to the people. The greatest need of every generation has always been laborers to go into the harvest to bring the Gospel to the world, and this generation is no different. Let me point out several observations about the harvest.
First, the harvest is the LORD’s. One reason to get involved in the harvest is because you love the LORD. The harvest is not your pastor’s or the church’s harvest, but the harvest is the LORD’s. Your love for the LORD is revealed by whether you will go into His harvest to reach the souls of men. You cannot tell me that you love the LORD and yet won’t go into His harvest with the Gospel to reach those who are lost. My friend, let me challenge you to realize that the LORD is trying to get you to see His harvest so that you will go into it.
Second, the harvest is great. If you desire to do something great in life, there is nothing greater that you can do than to reach lost souls with the Gospel before they slip out into eternity. The greatest endeavor any believer can get involved with is to reach the LORD’s harvest with the Gospel. The harvest is great, and there is no greater cause than reaching the harvest.
Third, there are few laborers for the harvest. The need of today is not community awareness and social outreach, the need of today is laborers for the harvest. Too many believers and churches are getting involved in things that will make no difference in the harvest. God did not commission the church to clean the streets, to be involved in politics, or to participate in community projects, but He commissioned the church to reach the harvest because it is so great. The fact that the greatest need for every church are laborers for the harvest cannot be disputed.
With the need being so great, what do we do with the harvest? First, realize that God sent you to harvest souls. God did not send you to sow seed, but He sent you to harvest the souls of men. God didn’t say that He needed laborers to sow the seed, but He said that He needed laborers for the harvest. The fact that God said that He needed laborers shows that people are ready to get saved. If you go soul winning with the mindset that there are souls to harvest with the Gospel, you will find yourself finding those who are ready to get saved. Your mindset as you go does determine how you will approach people with the Gospel. The fact that the harvest is great shows that people are ready to get saved; therefore, don’t worry about lazy critics who criticize your soul-winning methods.
Second, go to reach the harvest, and pray for more laborers at the same time. Just praying for the LORD to send laborers and not going yourself will not help the harvest. You need to go to reach the lost, and when you go, you will see the need for the harvest as the LORD sees it which will cause you to pray more earnestly for laborers. Don’t be guilty of going and not praying or praying and not going, but go labor in the harvest and pray for laborers at the same time.
