“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;”
Is it really crucial for your church to have revival meetings? Is it really important for your church to have three services a week? Do you really need to go to Sunday school weekly? While many churches are going to one or two services a week and have cut out their revival meetings and Sunday school, the Scriptures still make each of these services important.
God says in verse 11, “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;” God shows us the importance of these offices to the church in the next five verses. Let me show you why every church needs to utilize the pastor and Sunday school teacher, and have revival meetings with an evangelist.
First, the church will not mature without the use of the evangelist, pastor and teachers. God uses the pastor, Sunday school teacher and evangelist to help Christians mature. I have learned throughout the years of my ministry that I can say the exact same thing that the pastor has said, but for some reason my saying the truth helped a Christian to finally get what the LORD was trying to say through the pastor. It is vitally important for the maturity of the Christian that they attend Sunday school, every church service, and also have revival meetings for the evangelist to help mature them.
Second, the church will work better when the evangelist, pastor and teachers are utilized. God says that evangelists, pastors and teachers help the “work of the ministry.” The church will struggle to run properly without all three offices being utilized.
Third, the evangelist, pastor and teachers all help build the body of Christ. Verse 12 says, “…for the edifying of the body of Christ:” You will find that a church will be more prone to win the lost for Christ when the evangelist, pastor and teachers are all allowed to preach and teach God’s Word. It is also important for the evangelist, pastor and teachers to be soul winners themselves so that they will have the passion for motivating those to whom they minister to get a passion for soul winning.
Fourth, the evangelist, pastor and teachers will help identify false doctrine. Verse 13 says, “Till we all come in the unity of the faith…” With so much false doctrine always trying to get into the church, the evangelist, pastor and teachers can teach God’s Word in such a way that it will identify the false doctrine trying to destroy the church.
Fifth, the evangelist, pastor and teachers will keep the Christian from being “tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine.” The stabilization of the Christian is at stake, and if one service is cut out, or Sunday school is canceled, or the pastor stops having revival meetings, the Christian will suffer and never become a stable Christian.
Sixth, the evangelist, pastor and teachers help keep the focus on Christ. Verse 15 shows that if the evangelist, pastor and teachers are utilized, the Christian will stay focused on Christ. My friend, the importance of utilizing the evangelist, pastor and teachers is imperative. The church will never be what it is supposed to be without the evangelist, pastor and teachers being utilized in each church.
