2 Chronicles 7:12
“And the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for an house of sacrifice.”
One of the most famous verses used by preachers when preaching on revival is found two verses after the verse above. Verse 14 says, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” This is certainly a wonderful verse on revival that we all can hold onto with a strong belief that God can always send revival no matter how dark society may be.
However, verse 14 would never have happened had it not been for verse 12. In verse 12, “the LORD appeared to Solomon by night.” What would have happened had Solomon not listened to the LORD at night? What would have happened is that generations would never have the recipe for revival. Solomon had to be alert to the voice of God in the middle of the night to receive God’s promise and recipe for revival.
This is not the only time we see God speaking to someone at night. You may recall when Samuel was a young boy that God called him when he was asleep. He awoke in the middle of the night thinking that Eli was calling only to find out it was the voice of God. You see, the LORD’s appearance often happens at night. Many never hear the voice of the LORD because they don’t listen and respond to His calling. Let me give you a couple of thoughts that will help you when the LORD appears.
First, always give God a chance to speak to you when you awake in the night. When you can’t sleep at night, you need to spend time with the LORD in prayer and the Scriptures. Many times in my life when I can’t sleep at night, I get out of bed to spend time with the LORD. Some of the sweetest times I have had with the LORD have come in the middle of the night. My friend, don’t miss God’s voice in the middle of the night because you turn on digital media when you can’t sleep instead of spending time with the LORD.
Second, ask the LORD to help you hear His voice when He calls in the night. Have you ever thought that the reason you don’t hear God’s voice in the middle of the night is because you haven’t asked Him to make His voice clear to you when He calls? God is not going to call others in the middle of the night and ignore you. God will at times want to have that special moment with you, but you must be able to discern His voice when He calls.
Third, it takes a surrendering of the flesh to respond to the LORD’s appearance at night. Face it; getting out of bed when you are tired means you must sacrifice your time of sleep to spend time with the LORD. You will find that the sacrifice of sleep at night to spend time with the LORD is minuscule in comparison to the blessing of enjoying His presence. Don’t ever let your love for sleep keep you from spending time with the LORD when He speaks to you at night.
My friend, some of the sweetest times you will have with the LORD will be in the middle of the night. Some of the greatest times of clarity for life’s way will be found when you respond to the LORD’s voice in the middle of the night. Never let sleep or the time of night keep you from responding to the LORD’s voice.
