Joel 2:21
“Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the LORD will do great things.”
God is a God of greatness. One thing that separates God from all other gods is that He is a great God whose works are always great. I am reminded of Jeremiah 33:3 that says, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” Not only does God do great things, but He commands us to ask for great things.
If God commands us to ask for great things, and He says that He will do great things, what does “great” mean? Great means the things that He does are immense, extraordinary, exceptional, and powerful. In other words, when God does something, He does it bigger than anyone can imagine; this is why God’s people should always attempt great things. You must understand that if you are not attempting great things for God, God is not working in your life. God works in the lives of those who attempt great things because He does great things.
We live in times when many believe the great things of the past are done. Sadly, too many are “holding on” when they should be charging forward, attempting great things for a God who does great things. Let me remind you of four lessons about God doing great things.
First, God is never beyond doing great things. You will notice the verse above says, “…the LORD will do great things.” This verse doesn’t say that the LORD “did” great things, but that He “will do” great things. In other words, there is never a day when the LORD stops doing great things. God always wants to show His power, but He needs people to show His power through because He chooses to show His power through people.
Second, desire to do great things. You are sure not to do great things if you don’t desire them. I am saddened by the lack of people who desire to do something great for God. There ought to be pastors and Christians who desire to build the biggest church, bus route, and Sunday school class in their day. There ought to be believers who desire to see God perform the miraculous through their lives. If you don’t desire to do great things for God, you will never see His power working in your life.
Third, attempt great things. You are sure not to do great things if you don’t attempt them. If you don’t desire to do great things for God, you will certainly never attempt great things for God. If you don’t attempt great things for God, God will certainly never perform great things through you. The difference between those whom God has used greatly in the past and those whom He didn’t use is those whom He used greatly attempted great things for Him. Every believer ought to have a burning desire in their heart to do something great for God, and they should attempt it. You must never let fear stop you from attempting to see God do something great through your life.
Fourth, never settle for anything less than great things. You are sure not to do great things if you settle for anything less than great. If you are content with mediocrity, the great and mighty things of God will never be a part of your life. My friend, let me challenge you to attempt something great for God. It is better to fail at attempting something great for God than to succeed at mediocrity.
