The Noah Character

Genesis 6:9

“These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.”

One of the greatest characters in the Scriptures who is often talked about but not studied is Noah. When God talks about Noah, there are several things about this great man that every believer ought to copy. We could talk about how he found grace in the eyes of the LORD in a society that was godless. We could talk about how he walked with God alone in a world that wanted nothing to do with God. We could talk about how Noah was just in his treatment of people. We could also talk about his maturity in that he was “perfect in his generations” when others around him never grew. All these things are worth studying about Noah, but these may not be the greatest character trait of Noah.

The one thing I admire the most about Noah is his stand for right. For one hundred and twenty years, Noah never wavered in his stand for right. He did what was right for this length of time despite it seeming that God never came through. Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD because he walked with God and obeyed the God who gives grace. It would have been easy for Noah to quit, but his character not to be weary in well doing is what kept his faith strong that God would come through.

Do you find yourself beginning to give up on doing right because it seems that God is not doing anything for you? Whenever you get to the point that you feel that you are going nowhere, and you are at the point when you feel there is no purpose for continuing, let me point you to remember the character of Noah who continued for one hundred and twenty years. Were there times in Noah’s life that he wanted to quit? I don’t know, but I’m sure because he is human it crossed his mind. However, his character to do right was not based on the world around him or God working on his timeline for blessing, but it was based on the fact that it is right to do right despite nothing seeming to work out. Let me share a couple thoughts about how you can embrace the character of Noah in your life to stand despite never-ending opposition.

First, the Noah character does not need ease to do right. Too many quit doing right because it is not easy, but if you are only doing right because it is easy, you will certainly quit. Quitting is always in the future of the believer who only does right when it is easy or convenient. You must come to the point where you are going to do right despite the ease of doing right.

Second, the Noah character has perseverance. Greatness is never discovered in weeks or months, but in decades of doing right without seeing any results. The greatest Christians in the Scriptures are those who never saw the results of doing right, but they persevered and did right because it was the right thing to do.

Third, the Noah character found strength in walking with God. The only way you will continue when it seems as if doing right does not pay is by walking with God. The reward of being able to be in God’s presence daily should be the only reward you need when doing right seems not to pay off. Your faith in God’s promise to honor doing right is only strengthened by walking with God. My friend, you will never get the Noah character to continue doing right for decades despite no reward without walking with God.
