2 Chronicles 12:14
“And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.”
If I were to ask you if you had any intentions of doing evil, I would imagine your answer would be an emphatic, “No!” I truly don’t believe that anyone ever sets out to do evil, but as history has proven, many people have done evil and hurt thousands of people. Evil has been experienced by world leaders, ministry leaders, friends, and even family. The fact is, there are people who do evil.
What is it that would cause a person to do evil? The verse above says about Rehoboam, “And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.” It was the act of not preparing his heart to seek the LORD that led to his evil acts. Sadly, there are many Christians who are one step away from evil because they are not preparing their heart to seek the LORD. If not preparing your heart to seek the LORD leads to evil, we had better learn what it means to prepare your heart to seek the LORD.
First, it means to establish your heart in the LORD. In other words, it means you are going to have to decide like Joshua that you are going to serve the LORD. There must come a time in your life when you decide you are serving the LORD and nothing else. Every day you awake, you have a choice of serving the LORD or doing your own thing; however, if you don’t make that choice daily to serve the LORD, you are one step away from doing evil.
Second, it means to fashion your heart for the LORD. In other words, you must place the LORD as your priority for life. With everything you do, you must ask yourself if the LORD would be pleased with what you are about to do. You must seek His favor in all that you do if you are going to prepare your heart for Him.
Third, it means to tarry until you find the LORD. I’m afraid that too many people are quick to read the Scriptures or pray without determining to stay until the LORD meets with them. Let me ask you, does your heart burn when you are done reading the Scriptures? Is your heart filled with the LORD when you are done praying? There must come a time in your life when you say that you are not leaving your personal time with God until you have truly met with Him.
Fourth, it means to set a time to walk with Him. You will never walk with God faithfully unless you have a set time to meet Him daily. Christian, you are one step away from doing evil, and preparing your heart to meet with Him regularly will keep the evil away.
You may wonder, what is the importance of all this? Matthew 12:34 shows us when it says, “…for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” Whatever you put into your heart will come out. You cannot expect good to come from your life if you are not spending time with the LORD daily. Moreover, Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Your heart is what determines what you do. If you never spend time with the LORD, your issues of life will quickly turn to evil.
Let me ask you, are you one step away from evil? Do you prepare your heart daily to seek the LORD? My friend, anyone is capable of doing evil, but you can avoid it if you will prepare your heart to seek the LORD.
