“But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
The perfect work of patience is a believer who is mature and lacks nothing. When God says, “wanting nothing,” He is not talking about you getting every material desire that you have; rather, He is talking about you having the wisdom to help others as you serve the LORD. In other words, the perfect work of patience is the work that allows the believer to be mature enough to help other believers to grow into maturity. The perfect work of patience is the believer reproducing themselves in others. If you are going to be the mature believer who allows patience to have her perfect work, there are six things you will have to go through or do.
First, it takes trials. Patience cannot mature you if you have no hardships. It is the hardships that give the believer the wisdom they need to help others. You will never know how to help others without hard times. One of the blessings of hardships is that you learn how to get through them by God’s help so that you can help others by experience to get through their hard times. The perfect work of patience is the wisdom to help others in their hard times.
Second, it takes your faith to be tried. Patience is magnified when your faith is tried. You will never know the maturity that patience gives until your faith is tried through trials. There will come a time for every believer when they are faced with a trial that compels them to quit serving the LORD. It is in a trial like this that you mustn’t quit. You must be patient and let your faith in God grow as you are patient with the work of patience.
Third, it takes patience to be patient. The only way to acquire patience is through hard times. You already have the patience needed to endure your hardness; you just have to be patient until God gives you relief. Your patience is not being tried until you get to the point when you want to quit, but you don’t quit because you are being patient with God. The best way to be patient is to determine to put one foot in front of the other until you get through whatever you are facing. Patience is simply continuing on no matter what comes your way. Anyone can quit, but the patient believer continues on and allows patience to do its work in their life.
Fourth, it takes God’s wisdom. You will never make it through your trials without God’s wisdom. This is why God says in verse 5, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God…” You won’t know how to take the next step without the wisdom of God. All you have to do to get the wisdom you need to face your trials is ask God. My friend, stop whining about what you are going through and start asking God for His wisdom to help you through your trial.
Fifth, it takes faith. God says in verse 6, “But let him ask in faith…” You have to have faith that God will help you if patience is going to do her perfect work in your life. You are going to have to trust God and His omniscience if you are going to let patience have her perfect work.
Sixth, it takes determination to continue. God says in verse 8, “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” Quitting cannot be an option if patience is going to have her perfect work in your life. My friend, never look back! Be determined that you will never quit until God does His perfect work in your life through patience. You will experience the perfect work of patience if you don’t quit.
