“And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.”
In a day of digital technological dependence, an abundance of Bible conferences, and a critical spirit of the works from the past, I believe one of the greatest reasons great works are not being done today is because of a lack of the fulness of the Holy Spirit. You rarely hear sermons on the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Technology and magnificent edifices have replaced the importance of the Holy Spirit. Sadly, personality and humor seem to be what most people desire as preachers more than a desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Jesus told the disciples in the verse above, “…wait for the promise of the Father…” What was this promise? John 14:16 answers that question when Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;” Jesus knew that if great works were going to be done after He ascended to Heaven that the disciples needed to be filled with the Holy Spirit. What is the result of the disciples being filled with the Holy Spirit? Acts 1:8 answers when Jesus says, “But ye shall receive power…” They would receive power that was beyond their power. The power of the Holy Spirit would allow them to do greater works than they could ever do in their own flesh. Let me share with you from these verses what it takes to be filled with the Holy Spirit of God.
First, it takes obedience to God. Jesus told the disciples to “wait,” and they obeyed. You will never be filled with the Holy Spirit when you ignore His voice to disobey God. You must be obedient to the voice of the Holy Ghost, which results in your obedience to God. A disobedient believer will never be filled with the Holy Ghost.
Second, you must wait in prayer. Immediately after Jesus ascended to Heaven, the disciples assembled and prayed for the fullness of the Holy Spirit. You cannot expect the Holy Spirit to fill you when you can’t empty yourself in prayer to God. One of the reasons Jesus commands the believer to cast all their care upon the LORD is so that they can empty themselves so that the Holy Spirit can fill them. Prayer has a way of draining the believer of themselves so that the Holy Spirit has a place to fill. If you ever want to be filled with the Spirit, you must spend time in prayer.
Third, you must resolve any ought that you have with anyone. The disciples were gathered together in “one accord.” An unforgiving believer will never experience the fullness of the Holy Spirit. The believer who has ought with their parents, another believer, or a family member will find the fullness of the Holy Spirit will only be a story instead of reality. If you want the Holy Spirit to fill you, you need to be sure there is nothing you hold against any person.
Fourth, it takes faith in God’s promise to be filled with the Holy Spirit. It took faith for the disciples to believe God’s promise to fill them. Let me ask you; do you believe that the Holy Spirit fullness is for today? You must pray and act in faith if you want the Holy Spirit to fill you.
Fifth, it takes a purpose to serve for the Holy Spirit to fill you. The Holy Spirit will only fill those who serve the LORD. You will never be filled with God’s Spirit until you get busy serving the LORD in the harvest.
