2 Kings 18:6
“For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.”
When this verse says that Hezekiah “clave to the LORD,” it is saying that he was loyal only to the LORD. The reason Hezekiah was so blessed was because he had the right loyalty. The results of his loyalty to the LORD is found in verse 7 which says, “And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth…” Because Hezekiah was loyal to the LORD, He was willing to be with him wherever he went, which resulted in God’s blessings on his life.
We often hear about the importance of being loyal, but I believe our loyalty should never be to a man, but to the LORD. There are those who are so devoted to loyalty that they will be loyal for the sake of being loyal, even if the one to whom they are loyal compromises. This is why it is so important to have the right loyalty, which is loyalty to the LORD. Several things happen when you have the right loyalty.
First, you will have the right trust when you have the right loyalty. Verse 5 says that Hezekiah “trusted in the LORD God of Israel.” Hezekiah understood that the only one who could help him through his problems was the LORD. If you want the LORD’s presence in your life, you are going to have to trust Him in every aspect of your life. Trusting the LORD does not mean that you do what He asks when you understand, but it means that you do what He tells you to do even when you don’t understand. You may not know what the LORD is doing in your life, but you must continue obeying Him if you want to see His blessings.
Second, you will have the proper focus when you have the right loyalty. Hezekiah didn’t cleave to a man, but he clave to the LORD. Hezekiah could have certainly looked at some of those who influenced his life and followed what they said, but he chose only to be loyal to the LORD. You will never garner the LORD’s favor until you keep Him as your sole focus for action and beliefs. It was the act of cleaving to the LORD that led to Hezekiah prospering and procuring the LORD’s presence in his life. Christian, keep your focus on the only One Who has the power to control the affairs of your life, and that person is the LORD.
Third, you will sever the wrong associations when you have the right loyalty. Hezekiah’s loyalty to the LORD caused him to rebel “against the king of Assyria” and to choose only to serve the LORD. Friend, you cannot serve the world and the LORD. Likewise, you cannot serve a man and the LORD. If you stay loyal to the LORD, you will find that leaving the friends who compromise won’t be as difficult. One of the reasons people have a hard time severing associations with people who compromise is because their loyalty is to man and not God. When you give your loyalty to the LORD alone, it will keep you from continuing to associate with those who have compromised.
Much more could be said about these thoughts, but let these brief words be a reminder to keep the right loyalty. God’s presence in your life is dependent upon your loyalty. Loyalty to the LORD truly pays; it pays with His presence and blessings. It certainly takes faith to be loyal to the LORD, but faith is what procures God’s favor on your life. Always remember that the LORD alone is the source of all blessings; this thought alone should cause you to give your sole loyalty to the LORD.
