“Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.”
When I was a boy, my parents stressed the importance of following God’s will for my life. They would tell me that they didn’t care where I lived as long as it was within God’s will. They confirmed the importance of God’s will by saying, “You will be safer in the jungles of Africa than in the suburbs of America if it is God’s will for you to be in Africa.” That statement alone has followed me throughout my life and helped to give me security in the will of God.
God’s promise to Israel was the same security my parents gave to me about His will. God told Israel that He was going to take them into the Promised Land. The Promised Land was the destination of God’s will for Israel. Israel needed this promise because they would face many obstacles along the way. They needed to hear God’s promise of security while they followed His will for their life. God promises three forms of security for the person who follows His will.
First, you are not going alone. God says, “I send an Angel before thee…” This angel was always going to be there for them as long as they stayed in God’s will. You have to understand that as long as you stay in God’s will, you have an angel to go before you. Remember, the moment you leave God’s will you are leaving the presence of the angel. Whenever you leave God’s will, you are on your own to make it in this evil world.
Second, God’s protection is found in His will. God continues to say about His will, “…I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way…” The word “keep” means to guard and protect. God promises to protect me like my parents told me as long as I continue in His will. Many dangers may befall the Christian, but God is there to keep them from those dangers if they will walk in His way. There are dangers of sin’s temptation that want to lure you into sin, but God will protect you from them as long as you stay in His will. There are people who may want to hurt you, but God is that shield Who will protect you as long as you stay in His will. So many times in my life God has protected me from sin and danger. We will never know all the times God warded off the temptations that would have taken us had we not been doing His will. My friend, don’t underestimate the protection you have in God’s will. God’s will provides security for the believer; stay in it, and you will be safe.
Third, God’s preparation is found in His will. God finishes the verse above by saying that He “prepared” the way before us. Always remember that God has already been where you are going as long as you are walking in His will. One of the reasons He goes before us is to prepare our way. In other words, He already knows what you are going through. Remember that your present is the past with God. God is preparing your tomorrow while you live in His prepared will today. What an astounding promise for any Christian! You are safer in God’s will because He has already been where you are going.
Christian, the safest place for you to dwell is in God’s will. All you have to do is trust God that He knows what He is doing. You may not know or understand what His will has brought into your life today, but you can rest assured that He has been where you are and has already prepared the way for you.
