“And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.”
A great truth is missed in this verse because of everything that happened in the incident of the young man falling asleep. Paul preached a long sermon that took them late into the night. The verse above says that a young man fell asleep and fell from the third loft in the building where Paul was preaching. This certainly brought the sermon to a halt, but Paul went over, and through God’s power, raised the young man back to life.
This young man’s inattention during the preaching caused him to miss the truth that Paul was trying to get across to that congregation. Though that young man became the object of Paul’s miracles, he missed the greatest thing that could have changed his life, and that was he missed the presence of the Apostle Paul, the power of the Holy Spirit working, and the truths that were presented in that sermon. His inattention caused him to miss what God had for his life.
Sadly, we live in times when many people don’t pay attention in church as they should. What many don’t get is that their inattention causes them to miss many things that they will need later in life. Inattention causes you to miss the presence of the man of God. You will never know how great that preacher you have in front of you is until later in life. Inattention causes you to miss a truth that God has for your life. You can’t play around and get the truth God has for you. Inattention causes you to waste your time and the time of the man of God. Many people miss the truth that a preacher is delivering, and then they go into his office and ask for advice about the very topic that he preached on in that sermon. Had they listened to the preaching, they would not have missed the counseling they received in the sermon.
My friend, let me challenge you to pay attention when you are at church. Stop walking around in the church service; restroom breaks should be done before the church service, and not during the church service. Children should not be allowed to do their homework or draw on paper during the preaching time. You are establishing a bad habit in their character that will cause them to miss a truth, even as a child. Moreover, turn your phone off during the preaching. Satan will use the phone to ring at the wrong time, and the temptation to look at your phone during the preaching causes you to miss the truth that God has for you.
Furthermore, let me challenge you to pay attention and enjoy the man of God that God has given you. It is not just the preaching that you can learn from during the preaching time, but it is also the preacher’s passion that can learn from if you will pay attention. You should study the preacher and learn how he handles every situation that happens in the preaching. One day you will have a situation that you must handle, and you could have learned how to handle it if you would have paid attention to your pastor.
My friend, not paying attention causes you to miss out on so much that God has for you. Stop letting your mind wander in the preaching time. Stay awake and listen to what God has for you. Don’t let inattention cause you to miss truths you need to learn and the presence of people that you will one day want to enjoy.
