2 Peter 2:9
“The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:”
Why is it that some people seem to face more temptations than others? Throughout my lifetime I have watched God deliver me from things that I could not have overcome myself. It was as if God shielded me from doing something that would have altered my life. I’ve often wondered why it seems that God has shielded me from these things. The answer is found in the verse above where it says, “The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations…” The reason God shielded me from hurtful decisions is because I have tried to live a godly life. Christian, there is value in living godly; however, if we are going to live godly, we must find out what the Scriptures teach is godly living.
First, godly people pray. Psalm 32:6 says, “For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found…” A godly person always finds time to pray. They realize they cannot make it on their own, and their trust is placed in God as seen in their prayer life. You will always know how much a person trusts God by how much time they spend in prayer. The person who has little to no trust in God spends little to no time praying. On the other hand, the person who places full trust in God is the person who spends much time praying. You better spend time in prayer if you want God to protect you from temptation.
Second, godly people are faithful. Psalm 12:1 says, “Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.” Notice, “the faithful fail” is a description of why the “godly man ceaseth.” Faithfulness is one of the key character qualities of the godly. They are faithful because of Who they represent. A person’s awareness of Who they represent will be revealed in their faithfulness to what they are supposed to do. The more aware you are of God in your life and how you represent Him will be revealed in how faithful you are to doing your responsibilities. Becoming more aware of God in your life is the way to fix any faithfulness problem.
Third, godly people have a good spirit. Malachi 2:15 shows that the “godly seed…take heed” to their spirit. When you have the right spirit, you will be yielded to the right Spirit. If you yield to the Holy Spirit of God, you will find that He will help you to have a right spirit. The godly person always has the right spirit because they are yielded to the Holy Spirit. If you will take heed to letting the Holy Spirit control you, He will be sure that your spirit is also protected.
Fourth, godly people live right. Titus 2:12 says, “Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;” You will never live a godly life if you are constantly yielding to “worldly lusts.” My friend, stop desiring the worldly possessions and lifestyle. A godly person will say, “No” to those things of the world. When you live a godly life, your desires will be to help the kingdom of God.
Christian, there is no secret to overcoming temptation. The value of godliness is that God shields you from doing wrong. You will find that the more godly you live, the less temptation you will have to overcome. Constant temptation is simply the alert that you are straying from godliness. Live godly, and God will deliver you from temptation.
