Ezra 4:24 “Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.”
Some of the saddest words in the Scriptures are found in the verse above when it says, “Then ceased the work of the house of God…” I can only imagine how hard it was for Ezra and those with him to lay down their hammers and saws as government officials forced them to quit building the temple of God. Can you imagine as they passed by the temple everyday what was going through their hearts? We know from reading this book that Ezra had finally had enough, and when he had enough, he went back to building the temple without permission from the government; however, what he lost during the time of shutdown he would never be able to recover.
During the COVID 19 pandemic, many churches closed down and only went to virtual services. The soul winning, Sunday school classes, and the whole outreach was shut down because of government officials who relied on a failed doctor who changed his advice several times. The sad part about the shutdown is that the work of God ceased, and much of what was lost will never be recovered. Let me point out what happens when the work of God ceases.
First, the work accomplished always deteriorates while the work of God is ceased. You cannot let something sit and expect it not to deteriorate without it being used. Everything is built to be used, and when it is not being used, it deteriorates. One reason you must never let God’s work cease is because it deteriorates while it sits.
Second, you can never recover the time that you cease from God’s work. Time is something that can never be recovered. What is not done while the work of God ceases can never be recovered.
Third, you can never recover the souls that would have been saved during the time that you ceased from God’s work. There are souls that will go to Hell while you sit waiting for God’s work to start up again. My friend, we can never bring back the souls that are lost that could have been saved while believers cease from God’s work. Every soul that is lost while God’s work ceases will burn in Hell for an eternity; think on that!
Fourth, the potential lost while God’s work is ceased will never be recovered. The potential you were headed towards cannot be recovered because you can't regain that momentum to bring you to where you were. You may regain momentum, but you will never regain where you could have been.
Fifth, you can never recover the failed lessons you taught the next generation while God’s work is ceased. While you sit and do nothing, you are teaching the next generation that the work of God is not that important. Every excuse you give to God’s work being ceased is a lesson to the next generation as to how unimportant God’s work is to you.
My purpose in pointing this out to you is because many believers cease from God’s work to backslide or to do other things, and while God’s work is ceased, you are losing in the five areas mentioned above. My friend, never cease doing God’s work. Keep God’s work as a priority in your life. Time is short and unrecoverable; don't waste your time ceasing from God’s work to do things of less importance.
