“But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.”
One of the lost arts of this day is the ability to think. This generation has become such an entertainment society that it no longer thinks for itself. One of the reasons amusement parks and sports leagues make so much money is because people want to be amused. To “muse” means to think or ponder; to be “amused” means to divert your attention away from thinking. In other words, because this generation has become such an entertainment, amusement society, many never think and end up living in a fantasy world.
Joseph was not one of those people who never took time to think. The verse above says about Joseph, “But while he thought on these things…” When Joseph was faced with Mary being pregnant, instead of reacting without thinking, he stopped to think about the whole situation. It was while he was thinking that the angel had the opportunity to tell Joseph to go ahead and take Mary to be his wife because “that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.” Imagine what would have happened to this world if Joseph was not a thinker. Because he thought, the eternity of every person born can be in Heaven. Thinking was the main reason he was able to come to the right conclusion. Let me give you several statements about the importance of thinking.
First, thinking keeps others from making your decisions. One of the reasons this generation is so dumbed-down is because they let others think for them through amusement. You will never be used greatly in any area of life if you are not a thinker. Thinkers are able to come to their own conclusions without others interfering.
Second, God has the opportunity to influence the mind of the thinker. When a person doesn’t think, God doesn’t have the opportunity to show them His mind. It is often in the quiet time of thinking that the Holy Ghost can speak to your mind. One of the reasons you need to take time to think is so that God can tell you what you need to do.
Third, thinking keeps you from making foolish and rash decisions. Instead of rushing into a decision, you would be wise to step back and think about every situation. Joseph’s ability to think is what allowed him to see his situation clearly. Thinking instead of reacting allows you to step back and see the whole picture instead of reacting off the focus of the moment. You will be surprised at how much clearer you see situations when you stop to think and ponder about your situations.
Fourth, thinking is where the greatest ideas are discovered. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how many ideas the LORD gives you if you would take time to think. You will never discover ideas to help others if you must always be entertained. It is while you muse that your mind has the opportunity to process ideas to help different situations.
Fifth, thinking is what ignites the fires of motivation and innovation. Psalm 39:3 says, “My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned…” The more you think, the more you will find the excitement and fire you need to get things done. My friend, become a thinker. The greatest leaders and innovators are thinkers. God can use you to be the leader if you will just take time to think.
