“And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.”
The importance of one’s faith is seen throughout the Scriptures. Jesus often talked about seeing someone’s faith or His desire to find faith. Faith in the Christian life is imperative to how much the LORD is able to do through you.
The wisdom of growing one’s faith is found in the verse above when Jesus said, “…thrust out a little from the land.” It is in the very next verse that Jesus told the disciples to “Launch out into the deep.” Jesus knew that before they could trust Him to “launch out into the deep,” they needed the faith to “…thrust out a little from the land.” You will find that after they launched into the deep that the Saviour was then able to tell them to “let down your nets for a draught.”
The progression Jesus took to grow their faith was one step at a time. He knew that He first needed to get them to leave land where they could still see it, so He told them to “…thrust out a little from the land.” I’m afraid we often destroy young Christians because we ask them to let down their nets when they have not even thrust out a little from the land. We want them to read through God’s Word in a year when they have not even thrust out from land to read one chapter a day. Before a Christian has the faith to let down the nets, they are going to have to thrust out a little from the land. Many young Christians have been discouraged or disillusioned because mature Christians have not had the patience to ask them to “…thrust out a little from the land.”
My friend, maybe you find yourself in the situation where you want to let down the nets, but you haven’t even launched out into the deep. Maybe you are still standing on the land looking at the fish others have caught and wish you could do the same. Let me encourage you to “…thrust out a little from the land.” Until your faith is big enough to let down the nets, it must grow by thrusting out a little from the land.
Moreover, there comes a point in every Christian’s life when they need to launch out into the deep. You will never be satisfied with your faith in Christ as long as you always “…thrust out a little from the land.” The next step after thrusting out from land is to launch out into the deep. Once you have seen the LORD come through by thrusting out a little from the land, you must grow your faith to see that He will still be with you when you launch out into the deep. Every Christian needs to take the next step of faith from where they presently stand. Don’t get comfortable with little faith; trust the LORD and launch out into the deep.
You will never see the miraculous draught of fishes in your life until you thrust out a little, and afterward launch out into the deep. The disciples’ faith staggered a bit after launching into the deep because they only let down a net when He told them to let down the nets. Always remember along each progression of faith, the LORD’s command must be obeyed. Jesus didn’t fail the disciples when they thrusted out from land, or when they launched into the deep; likewise, He didn’t fail them when He said to let down the nets.
Where are you in this progression? If you are still standing on spiritual land, let me encourage you to thrust out a little from where you are. You will never see the draught of fishes in your life until you take the first step and thrust out little.
