“Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.”
Throughout the Scriptures, light is always a symbol of Jesus Christ. Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Jesus makes it clear that whosoever follows Him will not walk in the darkness of this world but will walk in His light.
The verse above says, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come…” My friend, you are to let the light of Christ shine through your life. Matthew 5:16 commands the believer, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” The light that you are to let shine is Jesus Christ. The reason you are to walk in the light is so that the world around you may look and see Christ in you. Four things happen in your life when you let the light of Christ shine in your life.
First, when the light is come, darkness will flee away. Darkness is always symbolic of sin and the world. You will find that when you let Christ shine in your life that sin will lose its grip on your life. You will discover that the closer you draw to the light of Christ that the pull and desire of this dark world will become weaker. The biggest reason you struggle with sin is not because sin is stronger than you, but you struggle with sin because you have not drawn to the light of Christ. The easiest way to overcome sin and darkness is to get close to the LORD. I know this sounds simple, but it is this simple. Sin cannot keep its grip on your life when you draw close to the light of Christ.
Second, when the light is come, life begins to take shape. Nothing is clear when you walk in darkness, but shapes become clearer as soon as light begins to shine. You will find that the closer you draw to Christ and His light that His will and His Word will make more sense to you. The reason many don’t understand why God wants them to do certain things is because they are not walking in the light. The closer you walk to the light, the clearer God’s will and holy living become to you, and the more you understand their need in your life.
Third, when the light is come, the glory of God is seen in your life. Verse 2 says, “…but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.” God will never get glory through your life until you allow His light to shine through you. Let me remind you that your life is supposed to be a tool that God uses to show Himself to this dark world. The only Bible that the world will read is your life. The only way the world will see Christ is through your life. My question for you is, how does the world see Christ because of your life? Is Christ magnified or diminished in your life? When you let the light of Christ shine through your life, you will discover that Christ will be seen and glorified because of what He does through you.
Fourth, when the light is come, you will be a better witness for Christ. Verse 3 says, “And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.” Do you desire more power in your witness for Christ? Do you want more people to respond to the Gospel when you witness to them? The answer is to let Christ’s light shine in your life. You will discover that when the light of Christ shines in your life that your life will be hidden and He will be seen resulting in more people coming to Christ. Your witness for Christ will become more powerful the more you let Christ’s light shine in your life.
