1 Peter 1:13 “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;”
We often hear the phrase that we need to tighten the belt when we are coming upon financial hard times. By tightening the belt we mean that we must cut back on unnecessary spending to only spending on things necessary to live. While I was an evangelist, my wife and I tightened our belts financially during the holiday seasons because the meetings were not as plentiful. To make it financially, we only spent money on those things that were necessary to live.
This same principle is being taught in the verse above. God says, “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind…” God is saying that the believer needs to tighten the belt of their mind because His coming is near. One of the greatest battles that any believer fights is the battle to control the thoughts of their mind. The reason some struggle with sins in the mind is because they don't control their mind, but they let outside sources control their mind. The reason people struggle with having compassion for people they don't know is because they don't control their mind. If you are going to “gird up the loins of your mind,” you will have to tighten the belt of your mind. Let me give you a couple of thoughts on how to do this.
First, you realize that your mind is where you win or lose in the Christian walk. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;” By casting down imaginations, God is saying that you must get control of your thoughts because that is where you will win in the Christian walk. You will recall how God says that if a man lusts on a woman in his heart that he has already committed adultery. In other words, if you get control of what you think about in your mind, you will get control of your life and win in the Christian walk.
Second, you choose what you think about. When God says in Philippians 4:8 to “think on these things,” He is saying that you choose what you think about. You will not get control of your mind when you let outside sources control what you think about. If you are commanded on what to think about, that means you are also commanded on what not to think about. You cannot think on these things in Philippians 4:8 if you don't control what controls your thinking. One reason I don't watch the news media is because I am not going to allow them to control what I think about. You cannot think on the things of Philippians 4:8 when you allow TV programming to think for you. Too many believers struggle with their mind because they don't control what they allow to feed their mind.
If you are going to win the battle of the mind, you are going to have to tighten the belt and control what you think about. You tighten the belt of your mind by feeding yourself the truths of God’s Word. You tighten the belt of your mind by feeding your mind music that is glorifying to God. You tighten the belt of your mind by being careful about the friends you run with. You tighten the belt of your mind by not getting involved in conversations that talk about people. When you tighten the belt on what you think about and narrow your thoughts down to what God wants you to do, you will get control of your mind and will be able to win in the Christian walk.
