To Make a Difference
Leviticus 11:47
“To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.”
To make a difference, you must be different. Nobody has ever made a difference, whether for bad or good, without first being different. You cannot make a difference when you are like everyone else. It is the difference that makes you stand out from the crowd that draws the crowds’ attention towards you so that you can help make a difference in their life.
God wants His children to make a difference; however, you will never make a difference without making decisions and living differently from others. God didn’t want Israel to look like every other nation. In the verse above, there are three words that will cause the believer to be different. Let me share these words with you and their importance to your Christian walk.
The first word is “difference.” You have to accept the fact that God wants you to be different. You cannot make a difference until you accept the fact that you are supposed to be different from the world.
The second word is “unclean.” In the Book of Leviticus, God goes through a list of things that He defines as “unclean.” In other words, God pointed out things that His children were not to eat or do. There must be an identity of what is wrong if you are going to make a difference.
The third word is “clean.” Just like God identified what was bad, He also identified what is good. There is nothing wrong with making a difference between bad and good. You cannot see what is bad if you don’t define what is good. These three words teach us several lessons.
First, you will often be different alone. You must accept the fact that you are not going to be the most popular person. If you want to be accepted by the world, you will never make a difference in the world for Christ. To make a difference in this world for Christ means that you will have to be different from the world, which will often result in you having to stand alone. You will find the greatest presence one could know, which is God, though being different from the world makes you stand alone.
Second, you must identify what is right and wrong if you are going to make a difference. You cannot make a difference without living a separated life. To make a difference, you must make difficult decisions that define certain things as wrong, and certain people as bad people. I know this flies in the face of many snowflake believers who want to be liked by all, but you will hurt people’s feelings when you determine that certain things are right or wrong.
Third, you have to tell yourself, “No,” if you are going to make a difference. You can’t always do what you want to do and make a difference for Christ. You will have to say “No” to people and activities for the cause of Christ if you are going to make a difference. If you cannot tell yourself not to do something, you will never be different from others.
My friend, as broken as this world is, it needs people who will make a difference by being different, and that difference is to be like Christ. You don’t make a difference by trying to be different, but you make a difference by being the different one who is willing to live a different life for the sake of Christ.
