1 Peter 3:8
“Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:”
One of the most complicated things to accomplish in any relationship is to be of one mind. Whether the relationship consists of a marriage, a church body, or two friends, having one mind is difficult because there are two minds involved in every relationship. However, if a relationship is going to be enjoyed to the extent that God intended, you are going to have to be of one mind.
Being of one mind is a choice. God never commands you to do something that He doesn’t give you the wherewithal to do it. God commands in the verse above, “Finally, be ye all of one mind…” Being of one mind does not mean that you won’t think differently, but being of one mind means that you are willing to set aside your preferences for the sake of accomplishing something together. The verse above shows you how you can take two minds that think differently and turn them into one mind for the common good of others. Let me show you how to be of one mind.
First, being of one mind is only be done through compassion. In other words, being of one mind will mean that you are sensitive to another’s feelings and thoughts. You cannot make a relationship about yourself if you are going to be of one mind. You must think about how another person feels of your actions if you are going to be of one mind. Stop making your relationships with others about you, and start making your relationships about others. By making your relationships about others, you will be able to turn two minds into one.
Second, you must love each other if you are going to be of one mind. True love is choosing to love the other person at their worst. Love is not being friendly and affectionate when you agree with a person, but true love is being kind and courteous to the person when they are at their worst. The test of your love for people is your treatment of them when they are at their worst. If the only time you want to love people is when they are at their best, you will never be of one mind. Being of one mind doesn’t mean that you will always be on your best behavior; rather, being of one mind means that you will have a bad day, but you are willing to love the other person in the relationship and treat them right in spite of the weaknesses they reveal when they are having a bad day.
Third, you must be pitiful if you are going to be of one mind. In other words, you will rejoice with others when something good happens to them, and you will weep with them when they are sorrowful. You cannot be of one mind and not think of the other person when they are going through hardships.
Fourth, you must be courteous if you are going to be of one mind. Being respectful and polite is imperative to being of one mind. Treating others with dignity is a must if you are going to be of one mind. You cannot be disrespectful to others and be of one mind.
Finally, you must return blessing for evil if you are going to be of one mind. People are going to wrong you, but you can’t return evil for evil if you are going to be of one mind. The greatest relationships will have bumps in the road, but they always learn to treat others respectfully and in a godly manner so they can accomplish the most for God’s purpose of that relationship.
