Song of Solomon 2:3
“As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.”
A shadow is a result of a presence. You cannot have a shadow without an object that causes the shadow. Likewise, you cannot have a shadow without the presence of light. Often, when the Scriptures talk about God, they refer to His shadow. When the Scriptures refer to the shadow of God, they are always talking about the believer dwelling with God in the closet of prayer. Psalm 91:1 says, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” That secret place is the place where the believer goes to pray. Several benefits are found when you choose to dwell in under the shadow of God in the secret place of prayer.
First, you find delight under the shadow of God. On a hot summer day, there is nothing like getting under the shadow of a tree to find a reprieve from the heat of the sun. When you dwell in God’s shadow in prayer, you will find a reprieve from the heat of the troubles that you are enduring. Many times you want that place of release from the pressures of trials, but the only place you will find that release is by dwelling under the shadow of God in prayer. Prayer has a way of taking away the pressures of trials so that you can enjoy life. The only way you will ever find delight during the trials of life is if you spend time with God in prayer.
Second, you find the presence of God while dwelling under the shadow. Song of Solomon 2:14 says, “…in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance…” One thing that happens when you dwell in the shadow of God is that you discover His presence in your life. You will find that the problems of life will become minuscule compared to the omnipotence of God when you dwell under His shadow.
Third, you will find refuge from the problems of life while dwelling under the shadow of God. Psalm 57:1 says, “…in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge…” Safety in life is never be found outside of the prayer closet. You are open to the direct hits of the enemy when you choose to dwell outside of the prayer closet. You will find that the attacks of the enemy will never faze you when you dwell under the shadow of the Almighty.
Fourth, you will find comfort under the shadow of God. Psalm 23:4 says, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” You will never find comfort in the vices of life. Vices will multiply your problems, but the closet of prayer always eases the pain of life’s troubles. You can run to social media to complain about your problems, or you can run to the shadow of God and find comfort for your shadow.
Fifth, you find life to become fruitful under the shadow of God. Song of Solomon 2:3 continues to say, “…I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.” My friend, life becomes fruitful in the time of troubles when you choose to dwell under God’s shadow in prayer. It is in the prayer closet where God turns the hardships of life into opportunities of fruitfulness. You will find that God will show you how to turn your hard times into tools to help others when you dwell with Him in prayer.
