1 John 1:7
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
When you got saved, you became a child of light. Before you got saved, you were a child of darkness, and that is why you did the works of darkness. The reason it didn’t bother you when you did wrong is because you were in darkness, and there was no light to shine on your sin. However, the moment you got saved, the light began to shine in your heart which revealed things that you needed to correct so that the light inside of you could shine brightly to those on the outside. This is why God commands us to “walk in the light,” but what does it mean to “walk in the light.”
First, it means you should realize that you are a child of light. You will never stop doing the works of darkness until you first acknowledge that you are a child of light. Knowing who you represent brings a sense of responsibility to what you do. Christian, the moment you got saved, you no longer belonged to darkness. When you acknowledge that you are a child of light, it will help you to identify the works of darkness in your life to get rid of, and it will allow the Holy Spirit to teach you how to walk in the light.
Second, you will never walk in the light until you fellowship with the Light. Jesus declared in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world.” The best way to walk in the light is to daily spend time with the One Who teaches what light does. This is why you must have a personal time with God every day. Your daily time with God helps you to discover those areas in your life that need to be changed. When you spend time with the Light in His Word, you will find that He will shine a light on the dark areas of your life that need to be forsaken.
Third, walking in the light means you should walk with children of the light. My friend, why would you walk with children of darkness when you are a child of light? The verse above makes it clear that when you walk in the light that you will “fellowship one with another.” This all happens because you are walking with the Light. The best way to find the friends with whom you should fellowship is to walk with the Light, and you will discover those around you who have the same desires. If you stop looking for friendship and start walking with the Light, you will discover friends of the light around you. There is no secret to finding friends who are likeminded if you are walking with the Light.
Fourth, when you walk in the light, you will stop avoiding your sin problems. Verse 8 shows that those who deny their sin are only deceiving themselves. You will find that once you start walking in the light, you will want to identify those areas of your life that hinder your fellowship with the Light. The greatest way to overcome sin is to walk with the Light and He will reveal any darkness in your life.
Fifth, when you walk in the light, you will come clean from darkness. Verse 9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The greatest thing about this verse is that you don’t have to cleanse yourself from sin, because God will cleanse you if you confess them to Him. When you see the darkness in your life, confess it to God and He will cleanse you from it. When you are cleansed from darkness, you will find that your light will shine brighter enabling you to better point others to the true Light.
