Walking
Romans 4:12
“And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.”
In the Scriptures, walking is often referred to living, acting or behaving in a certain manner. If we as Christians are going to run the race that God has set before us, then we must walk in the steps that He desires for us to walk. In the Book of Romans, God shows four ways that a Christian is to walk. If you walk in the steps that the LORD desires, you will find that you will be able to run your race successfully. Let me share with you the four ways you are to walk as a Christian.
First, you are to walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4 says, “…even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Walking in “newness of life” is the answer to having good fellowship with God. One of the reasons a Christian gets baptized is because they are showing to the world that they are no longer going to walk in the steps of the world; rather, they are identifying with Christ and are going to walk in the newness of life. You will never please the LORD until you decide to identify with Him by walking the new life. You cannot please the world and the LORD at the same time. If you choose to walk in the newness of life, the friends of the old life will mock and criticize everything you do; however, walking in newness of life will help you to have sweet fellowship with the LORD.
Second, you are to walk in the Spirit. Romans 8:4 says, “That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Walking in the Spirit is the answer to having victory over the flesh. You will never be able to walk in the newness of life without walking “after the Spirit.” Walking after the Spirit means to literally follow the steps where the Spirit leads. When I walk after someone, I am following them. You must follow the steps of the Spirit if you are going to have victory over your flesh.
Third, you are to walk in the steps of honesty. Romans 13:13 says, “Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.” Walking honestly is the answer to building credibility with the world. You will never have the testimony to influence the world without honesty. The world will never trust you and what you say if they find you dishonest. One of the reasons you need to be honest with everything that you do and say is so that you can build your credibility so that the world will trust what you say is true. One of the things that made the message of the prophets of old impacting is that they were men of integrity. If the Christian wants to make an impact in their world for Jesus Christ, they are going to have to be a person of integrity. Don’t expect people to listen to you if you are not walking in the steps of honesty.
Fourth, you are to walk in the steps of faith. Walking in the steps of faith is the answer to seeing God perform the miraculous through your life. Abraham was able to see God perform the miraculous through him because he lived a life of faith. The only thing that keeps God from doing great works through your life is your lack of faith. If you learn to trust the LORD and step out by faith, you will see God perform the miraculous through your life. Always remember that God never asks you to step out by faith alone because He is always there to walk with you when you walk by faith.
