1 Kings 13:24
“And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.”
We don’t know the name of this young prophet, but we do know how the LORD used him to prophesy against Jeroboam and his wickedness. The prophecy which he prophesied was true, but it was the only recorded instance in this young prophets life of the LORD using him. Why was his life cut short? Because he disobeyed the word of the LORD by going to the house of the old prophet when he was commanded to go straight back to his own house. It is sad that a life with so much promise was wasted because he took God’s command for granted.
Sadly, there are many Christians who have so much promise wasted because they disobey God’s command. Many of these Christian’s have seen God bless their lives just like this young prophet, but now have wasted what God could have done through them because they disobeyed God’s Word. Several observations can be learned from this young prophet’s life that can help you avoid becoming the next person to waste a promising life.
First, one victory never guarantees another. I don’t know whether or not this young prophet took God’s blessings for granted, one thing I do know is that he never again experienced God’s blessings. Just because God blessed you at one point in your life doesn’t guarantee His blessings again. Obedience is what brought the blessings, and obedience is the only thing that will keep them coming. Disobedience will turn off the blessings of God so quickly that you won’t realize that they are gone. Look at Samson who didn’t realize he lost God’s power when he disobeyed. If you want to see God’s blessings continue in your life, you must continue to obey.
Second, compromise always wastes a promising life. What makes a life so promising is the Christian who has an unwavering stand for truth, because it takes God’s power to see God do something through those who stand for right. This world doesn’t like the truths of God; so they can’t deny that God is doing something when a person stands. If you want to waste God’s future for your life, just surrender to the call to compromise. Those who compromise will one day look back and rue the day they forfeited God’s blessings for their life by surrendering to compromise. Don’t let that be your story.
Third, wasting God’s promise will adversely affect several generations. This young prophet’s disobedience resulted in Jeroboam recanting his decision to obey, which affected many other people. One thing can be guaranteed when you disobey; you will cause others never again to want to serve the LORD by your disobedience. So many people are bitter today because a leader chose to disobey. No, their hurt isn’t a valid excuse to disobey, but it is a fact that many never serve the LORD again because of one leader’s sin. Don’t be guilty of influencing others for wrong because you chose to disobey.
My friend, obedience always makes the future promising for any individual. Don’t think that one act of obedience is a guarantee for God’s continued blessings. Remember that the Devil always offers a moment to compromise after each victory. Stand strong for truth and always obey the LORD and you will never become a wasted promise.
