“Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.”
Your clothing says a lot about you. Your clothing is your identity. One reason teenagers are so worried about their clothing is because they see the trends in society, and they want to make sure they are in the trends. The clothing of a person often shows whether they are a poor person, if they are a person who cares about appearance, and it often shows with whom a person identifies.
God says in the verse above, “Blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments…” In the book of Revelation, God talks about the believer being clothed in “fine linen,” and in clothing that is “pure and white.” God is saying that the believer’s spiritual garments is their testimony. No, not the actual clothing that you wear, but your garment is the testimony that you received when you got saved. God is saying that the believer needs to guard his testimony so that it doesn’t become soiled with sin or the world. There are four things you can do to guard your garments.
First, guard your prayer life. A believer who walks with God in prayer will find the holy life is not difficult to live, because you can’t walk with God and live in the world at the same time. You will find that the more you pray, the farther you will distance yourself from the sins of the world and temptation. You show me how much you battle sin, and I will show you how much time you spend in prayer. My friend, it is not difficult to overcome sin. Walk with God in prayer and sin and temptation will flee away.
Second, guard your association life. Revelation 18:4 says, “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins…” One of the easiest ways to keep yourself from soiling your testimony is to run with the right people. You can’t run with the wrong crowd and expect your testimony to stay intact. You become like those with whom you associate. You can’t stay in a bar without eventually drinking like those in the bar. You can run with whoremongers without eventually committing fornication or adultery. You can run with those who have foul language and expect your conversation to be wholesome. My friend, your associations do matter. If you want to keep your spiritual garment from being soiled, stay away from those who live in the hog pen of sin.
Third, guard your private life. Your private life reveals your character. What you do when nobody is watching is the true revealer of the cleanliness of your spiritual garment. You may be able to put on a good facade for awhile, but eventually your private life will come out for all to see. If you want to have a testimony that is holy, you had best guard what you do in your private time. Your thought life and the actions you do in private will determine what your testimony becomes tomorrow. What you do in private today will become your life in public tomorrow. Keep your private life clean today if you don’t want tomorrow’s life to be filled with sin and heartache.
Fourth, guard your service life. The more you serve God, the less time you have to live in sin. It is truly easy to overcome sin. Stay busy serving the LORD instead of playing in the world, and you will find your life won’t be filled with the sin of the world. The best way to have the character to overcome sin is to stay so busy serving God that you don’t have time to entertain sin’s temptation. Stay busy serving the LORD and you will keep your spiritual garments clean.
