We Have Treasures
“But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not: for we have treasures in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he forbare, and slew them not among their brethren.”
Ishmael was conquering city after city and murdering every person along his conquest. He came to another city and began slaughtering the people until he came to ten men. These men said to Ishmael, “Slay us not: for we have treasures in the field…” It was their treasures that saved these men from dying.
When you think of treasures, you normally think of gold, silver or precious jewels, but these were not the treasures that these men had that saved their lives. The treasures of these men were wheat, barley, oil and honey. In other words, the real treasure of these men was their work ethic. Had these men not worked, they would not be able to have the wheat, barley, oil and honey. All of these commodities are produced because of work.
One of the greatest treasures that any person can hold is to have a good work ethic. If you have a good work ethic, you will always be able to find a way to make money. Sadly, many youths would rather play than work, and then they find out when they graduate from high school that their playing mentality doesn’t make money or pay the bills. The richest person is not the person who achieves the highest level in gaming, but the richest person is the person who has the ability to get a job and work to pay their bills and provide food for their family. Let me share a few thoughts with you about the treasure of having a good work ethic.
First, working is not supposed to be easy, but it can make life easier when you get older. While others in Israel were playing, these ten men were plowing the fields, harvesting the crops, beating the olives and producing oil, which eventually made their lives easier than those who played. Work is never intended to be easy. If work was easy, every lazy person would work, but the hardness of work is what separates the diligent from the lazy.
Second, a good work ethic eventually teaches you a trade so that you can get a job anywhere you go. If you don’t jump from job to job, you can learn a trade that allows you to make money no matter where you go. One reason some people never rise in the workforce is because they don’t stay long enough to learn the trade. You will find yourself having the ability to get a job in every city or state if you learn to work hard and develop a trade where you work.
Third, a good work ethic develops a good savings ethic. These men were able to save their lives because they saved wheat, barley, oil and honey. Their work ethic caused them to appreciate the value of saving. You will find that when you work for what you get that you will better appreciate the money you earn. The more you appreciate the money you earn, the more careful you are about spending it. A good work ethic helps you to learn the value of money.
My friend, one of the greatest treasures you can develop is a good work ethic. You don’t have to come from a privileged background to develop a good work ethic, but you develop it by having the character to work hard. You will never regret developing a good work ethic. If you learn to work hard, you will find that you will always find a place to work because the greatest need of employers is a person who will work hard.
