Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
When Jesus says, “Let your light so shine before men,…” one must ask themselves what He means by “your light.” What is the light of the believer? The question, “what is your light” would better be asked by asking, “Who is your light?” The believer’s light is Jesus Christ, for He is the Light of the world. Jesus proclaimed in John 8:12, “…I am the light of the world:…” He also proclaimed in John 9:5, “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Either Jesus is the biggest fraud who ever walked the face of this Earth, or He is the Light of the world as He proclaimed. The fact that God the Father proclaimed that Jesus is God, we then know that Jesus is the Light because He cannot lie.
When Jesus says to let your light shine, He is saying don’t hide the Christ who lives within you, but let Him shine so the world can see Him. When the believer gets saved, the Holy Spirit moves within the believer so that they can become a testimony for Christ. The fact that you have the Light dwelling within you should cause you to let the Light of Christ shine through you.
Let me illustrate this in a better way. When you look at a light bulb, it is the filament inside of the bulb that gives off the light. The bulb of itself does not give light; it only magnifies the light that comes from the filament. If you take the filament out, that bulb is worthless to give light in darkness. The bulb without the filament keeps the room dark because it has no power of its own to light the room.
My friend, Jesus is the filament of your life, and you are to be the bulb that allows the filament inside of you to shine bright. When Jesus is saying to let “your light” so shine before men, He is saying that you are to be sure not to let anything hinder the filament inside of you, which is Jesus Christ, from shining to the world about you.
How does the believer let the Light of Christ shine brightly to the world? Jesus tells us when He says, “…that they may see your good works…” In other words, Christ is your light, but the only way the world can see your light is through the good works that you do. The only works that allow the light of Christ to shine in the believer’s life are the good works of Christ. Christ is telling the believer to do the works that Christ would do if He were in your shoes, and your light, Jesus Christ, will shine brightly to the world about you.
My friend, the works that you do will determine how bright the light of Christ shines through you. If you fill your life with the works of selfishness and unrighteousness, your light will be darkened by the filth of sin. The only works that you can do that will make your light shine to a dark world are the works of Christ. If you fill your life doing the works that Christ sent you to do, you will find your life will be a light for the world to see Christ through you.
Let me ask you, when the world sees you, do they see darkness because your life is filled with works of self, or do they see light because your life is filled with the works of Christ? Don't be a worthless bulb that has covered the filament inside of you, Jesus Christ, from shining to the world about you. Keep your bulb or life clean, and the filament of Christ will shine brightly to the world so they can see Christ within you.
