“Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.”
There are times in life when the only answer to your situation is prayer. Daniel faced one of those times when tyrannical cabinet members of Darius fooled him into making a law that people were only allowed to pray to the king. These tyrannical, deep-state members, hated that the outsider, Daniel, was more powerful than they, and they knew that he prayed three times a day. However, when the law was made, it did not stop Daniel from praying; instead, he prayed “as he did aforetime.” Daniel understood that God’s laws were higher than man’s laws, and though man’s laws tried to take his physical freedom, prayer had more power to stop what man’s laws were trying to do. When you study this incident, you will find several times when prayer is needed in your life. Let me share those times with you.
First, prayer is needed every day. Daniel didn’t start praying because the law was made, but he kept praying as he did before the law was established. You would do yourself a great favor in life if you learned to pray in those times when prayer doesn’t seem to be needed. If you will pray daily, you will know how to pray when the dire times of life plead for you to pray. One of the wisest decisions of your life would be to establish a daily time with God in prayer.
Second, prayer is needed when others are trying to hurt you. Daniel didn’t try to get revenge with those who were trying to hurt him; instead, he prayed as he had always prayed. Anger may try to dictate your response when others try to hurt you, but prayer is always the best response to help your situation.
Third, prayer is needed when your actions have hurt someone. Darius’ law had unnecessarily hurt Daniel, so the only thing he could do to change the situation was to pray. When you have done something to hurt others, and when you are unable to change what the hurt has done, prayer is the only thing that can change that situation. You can try to work everything out yourself, and you should try to right what your wrong has done, but prayer is ultimately the only answer that will change your situation.
Fourth, prayer is needed when facing tyrannical laws. When man’s laws disagree with God’s laws, you must obey God’s laws. However, that doesn’t mean that man won’t try to hurt you. My friend, God is able to change the law or to remove the tyrannical leader. Prayer is the answer to those times when man’s laws attempt to wipe out God’s people.
Fifth, prayer is needed when you can’t sleep. When Darius couldn’t sleep, he prayed. When you are facing sleepless nights because your mind is occupied with troubled thoughts, your answer is to go to the God of peace and pray to Him. Don’t waste your sleepless nights tossing and turning in bed; use those nights to spend time with God in prayer about your situation.
Sixth, prayer is needed when facing danger. Daniel prayed in the lion’s den, and you should pray when you are about to face the lions of your life. God is able to shut the mouths of the lions in your life, and prayer is where you rally God’s hand to fight on your behalf.
