“And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him.”
The ministry of Christ started with one person, Jesus Christ. When reading the Gospels, you will see that the first thing Jesus did after spending forty days in the wilderness was to go soul winning. Jesus left the wilderness and walked by the sea of Galilee where He saw Andrew and Peter casting a net into the sea. Jesus said to them, “Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.” These men immediately forsook all to follow Christ. He continued further and called James and John, and they left all to follow Christ. It was after this that Jesus’ ministry began to grow to the point that multitudes followed Him everywhere He went.
However, there was one key to the multitudes hearing about the works of Jesus, and that key is found in the verse above. The verse above says, “…when they had heard what great things he did…” This little phrase is the key that causes many churches not to grow. Had these people not heard about the great things of what Jesus did, they would have never come. Those who followed Christ had to tell the multitudes about the “great things” that were being done. Several things must happen if people are going to hear about the great things in your church so that it can grow.
First, the pastor must set the example. It was Jesus’ example after coming out of the wilderness of calling people to follow Him that started this great work. People can’t follow great works if the pastor is not doing a great work. Every pastor must set the example for his people to follow. One of the big reasons most churches don’t grow is because the only example they have is excuses instead of work. It takes hard work from the top in order for the people to be motivated to want to follow. The disciples would not have been motivated to tell others about Christ if He was not setting the example by asking people to follow Him.
Second, the people must be willing to follow. There are many cases where the pastor is working hard, but the people are not following him. My friend, your church will not grow on the pastor’s work alone. You must be willing to follow the pastor’s example of soul winning and inviting people to church if your church is going to grow and reach the multitudes in your city. If a church is going to grow and reach the multitudes of their city, it will take the hard work of soul winning and inviting people to church from both the pastor and the people. No church has reached the multitudes of their city without doing the hard work of soul winning.
Third, everyone must talk about the “great things” going on in their church. It is interesting that these people heard about the “great things” that Jesus was doing. You will notice that they didn’t talk about the “things” going on in Jesus’ ministry, but they talked about them and said that there were “GREAT things” going on in Jesus’ ministry. If you don’t believe what is going on in your church is great, people will not want to come and see it. The greater the work is in your heart, the greater it will become in how you speak about it. Instead of minimizing what is happening in your church, you need to speak of its greatness and the great things God is doing in it. People want to be part of something great, and if you will believe it is great and tell people it is great, they will come and see it and want to become a part of it.
