“Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.”
In the verses above, God deals with foundational doctrines. He talks about the importance of getting saved when He says, “not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God” He talks about the importance of baptism when He says, “Of the doctrine of baptisms.” God continues to talk about the importance of being sent out to do what you have been taught when He says, “…and of laying on of hands.” He finishes by talking about the rapture and the judgment when He says, “and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.” These are all foundational doctrines that everyone needs to learn.
However, one of the doctrines that could easily be missed is when God talks about the “doctrine of baptisms.” The word “baptisms” is plural, which means that there are two baptisms. In other words, the baptism of obedience after you get saved is not enough; there is another baptism. In other words, you need to get baptized again. Does this mean that you need to be baptized in water again? Absolutely not! The reason God talks about “baptisms” in the plural is because He is also talking about the believer being baptized with the Holy Ghost.
Four times in the Scriptures God talks about the need of the believer being “baptized with the Holy Ghost.” It is interesting that God compares the filling of the Holy Ghost with being baptized. The reason God uses this comparison is because when a person gets baptized by water, they are totally immersed under water. God wanted the believer to be totally immersed under the power of the Holy Ghost. To be baptized by the Holy Ghost means to be plunged and immersed under His power.
One of the greatest needs in Christianity today is to be baptized again; no, not being baptized of water, but being baptized with the Holy Ghost. You will never be who God wants you to be until you are baptized with His Holy Ghost. You will never know what He wants to do through you until you are baptized with His Holy Ghost. When the church was baptized with the Holy Ghost in the upper room, great works showed themselves through those people. It was after being baptized with the Holy Ghost that three thousand people were saved. It was after being baptized with the Holy Ghost that Stephen preached with such power that the hardened heart of Saul was under great conviction. The only reason the church of today has no power is because the church of today is more interested in social programs than they are with being filled with the Holy Ghost. When every believer in the church gets baptized with the Holy Ghost, you will see that church turn their world upside down for Christ.
My friend, the baptism of the Holy Ghost is still available today. It was after D.L. Moody was baptized with the Holy Ghost that God used him to turn two continents to Christ. Do you desire to be baptized with the Holy Ghost? Have you been baptized with the Holy Ghost? You must realize that the baptism of the Holy Ghost always comes AFTER God’s people spend much time in prayer asking for His power. You will never know what God can do through you until you are baptized with the Holy Ghost.
