“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
There is a power inside of every believer who could help them become a different person if they would yield to that power and allow it to fill them. That power that I am talking about is the power of the Holy Ghost. The disciples had already received the Holy Ghost, but they were yet to be empowered by the Holy Ghost.
John 20:22 says, “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:” Obviously, they had access to the Holy Ghost, but they had yet to be empowered by Him. Before the verse above, you see the disciples cursing, sleeping in prayer, fighting, dressing indecently, fleeing, and standing around gazing at the sky when Jesus ascended to Heaven. After the verse above, you see the same men praying, standing, speaking boldly about Christ, working in one accord, preaching, soul-winning, and continuing in the LORD’s work. The difference in these men was that they were working under a different power. Before the verse above, they were working through the power of the flesh, but after the verse above, they were working through the power of the Holy Ghost. The empowering of the Holy Ghost is what changed these men.
The biggest need in your Christian life is to be empowered by the Holy Ghost. One of the greatest reasons you experience continual failure in the Christian walk is because you are walking in your power and not in the Holy Spirit’s power. The reason you find yourself sleeping in prayer instead of interceding in prayer is because you are working under the wrong power. The reason you find yourself cowering to be a witness for Christ is because you are working under the weak power of the flesh. You may know how to do the works of God in the flesh, but the know-how is never a replacement for the Holy Spirit’s power. When you work under your flesh, you will find yourself doing the same things that the disciples did before they were filled and controlled by the Holy Ghost.
My friend, the answer to having victory and making an impact in the Christian life is to work under the power of the Holy Ghost. Until you start working under a different power than your flesh, you will continue to see fruitless or minimal fruit in your Christian walk. Sin will continue to have victory over you until the Holy Ghost controls you. You will continue to fight holy living until you let the Holy Ghost take control of your mind and empower it. You will find fear of the crowds will cause you to flee until you start working under a different power; the power of the Holy Ghost.
You then ask, how do we get this power of the Holy Ghost? The answer is found in verse 4 when it says, “…but wait for the promise of the Father…” In other words, you will never find God’s power until you spend time alone with God in prayer asking for the power of the Holy Ghost to be poured out upon you. The difference that happens when the Holy Ghost empowers you will be like night and day; you will never find that difference until you have your upper room time with God. My friend, if you want the difference that happened in the disciples to occur in your life, you must get alone with God in prayer and ask for His Holy Ghost to empower you.
