“Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.”
The one thing we notice about these people in this verse is not that they did not know any better, but that they knew better. Notice that this verse says, “…they made their hearts as adamant stone…” The problem with these people was not that they had not heard or that they did not know better, the problem was that they just did not want to hear. These people knew what the law said and what the prophets preached, but they chose to ignore those words because it brought conviction to their hearts about the lifestyle they wanted to live. God was essentially saying to these people, “Because you know better, I will send ‘great wrath’ upon you.”
Sadly, many Christians find themselves in the same position as the people in the verse above. They grow up in church hearing the preaching of the Word of God, but because the Word of God doesn’t agree with the life they want to live, they choose to ignore God’s Word and live their worldly life. The danger with this mentality is that God holds you more accountable for your sin when you know better. When you have heard the truth and purposely choose to ignore it, God will hold you accountable for it because you know better.
An individual asked me how a person who used to be a spiritual leader could end up in their current condition. This former leader grew up hearing the truths of God, but when they became a leader, they chose not to follow what they were taught. I told this individual that because they knew better, God dealt with them more harshly than He would have with the person who didn’t know better.
My friend, God holds those who grow up hearing the truth more accountable than those who don’t. If you are a second-generation Christian, you know better than to live in the world. You know better than to bring the rock music of the world into your life. You know better than to compromise your standards of holiness to appease your lifestyle. You know better than to compromise the King James Bible for the perversions that the Devil offers. I could continue to go down a list of compromising sins, but the Holy Spirit has already made it clear to you what area you know is better. Let me remind you that God does hold you accountable for what you know. You can try to justify your lifestyle, but God knows that you know better.
Christian, instead of trying to make God’s Word fit your life, you should make your life fit His Word. If you don’t want to face the wrath of God, you had better adhere to what you know is the right thing to do. It is not what you don’t know that is going to destroy you, but it is what you do know and ignore that will bring God’s wrath on your life. Yes, we may live in the day of grace, but you don’t want to bring God to the point where He must punish you because of your hardened heart.
Let me ask you; what is it in your life that you choose to ignore from God’s Word? Let me encourage you for the sake of not experiencing God’s wrath to stop ignoring it and start obeying it. God will hold you accountable for what you know. Don’t test God’s longsuffering, but reward His grace by obeying what He commands you to do.
