Romans 8:5 “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.”
When I was dating my wife, I found out that my mindset about what I was concerned with changed. There was a reason my mindset changed and that was because I had added a new relationship in my life with someone I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. It was telling that before I met my wife, I had time for many other activities that pleased me, but when I started dating her and even married her, I wanted to do activities that she desired to do with me.
The verse above reveals that the believer’s concerns in life tell about who the believer is pursuing. The keyword in the verse above is “mind.” The word “mind” means attention, thoughts, attentiveness, inclinations, desires, way of thinking. This definition reveals what you are pursuing in your life. Let me illustrate this in several ways.
First, what grabs your attention shows whether you mind the things of the Spirit or the flesh. You are minding the things of the flesh when worldly functions cause you to pause and want to do them. On the other hand, you are minding the things of the Spirit when the things of God grab your attention. When you want to do more things for the entertainment of the world than for God, you are telling everyone that your flesh is what is controlling your life.
Second, what you think about the most shows whether you mind the things of the Spirit or the flesh. Let me ask you, what controls your thought life? When you are pursuing the Spirit of God, you will find that your thoughts will be mostly about how you can do the activities of God better. When you are pursuing the flesh, you will find your thought life rarely thinks about what you should be doing for God.
Third, what you are inclined to do shows whether you mind the things of the Spirit or the flesh. I can tell a lot about a person by what they talk about the most. People who lean more towards the world will talk about worldly affairs, politics, and worldly functions. A person who is inclined to do the things of God will talk more about what they are doing for God, what God’s Word spoke to them about, their ministry, and what God is doing for them. You are telling on yourself when most of your conversations are about you and the things of the world.
Fourth, your way of thinking shows whether you mind the things of the Spirit or the flesh. What you tend to compare things to reveals whether you are minding the things of the Spirit or flesh. I’m always amazed how believers compare many things to Hollywood movies or actors. What they are telling me is that they are minding the things of the flesh. When your way of thinking is always about what you are doing for the LORD can be helped by something you saw, an idea, or something you thought about, you are revealing that you are minding the things of the Spirit.
Now, let me ask you, are you minding the things of the Spirit or the flesh? What do your actions and conversations say about you? My friend, you cannot please God when you are minding the things of the flesh. If you want to mind the things of the Spirit, you must yield to His control. It won't be hard to be concerned with the things of God continually when you mind the things of the Spirit.
